GRI and Japan's Sustainability Standards Board Forge Ties in Tokyo
GRI and the Japan Sustainability Standards Board (SSBJ) held their first bilateral meeting in Tokyo on 14 November 2024. This collaborative meeting marked a new phase of international cooperation to strengthen the corporate information landscape. Representatives of both organizations reviewed their respective initiatives and discussed urgent issues such as recent progress in reporting on business sustainability.
Participants stressed the importance of harmonizing global and regional standards to better address the environmental, economic and social impacts of organizations. Carol Adams, President of GRI, expressed his enthusiasm for the association, saying: “We loved being welcomed to Japan by the SSBJ. We hope to continue to explore together how to report on an organization’s most significant impacts, as permitted by the ECM standards, can help companies assess their impacts, risks and opportunities while providing more comprehensive sustainability information to a wide range of stakeholders
This collaboration demonstrates a shared commitment to improve transparency and accountability in sustainability reporting. By facilitating the exchange of ideas and harmonization of reporting practices, GRI and SSBJ aim to provide businesses with the tools they need to effectively assess their impact on long-term sustainability. This is in line with the growing demand for reliable sustainability information in global markets.
GRI and SSBJ outlined plans for further dialogue and collaboration, indicating that they focus on improving corporate sustainability practices globally. As departmental reports evolve to meet the needs of various stakeholders, these partnerships should play a key role in formulating future sustainability standards.
