FASB Proposes Updates to Clarify Interim Reporting Guidance
The US Green Building Council (USGBC) released its comprehensive Impact Report on November 14, 2024, celebrating three decades of progress in transforming the built environment to foster a sustainable future. The report showcases the global influence of USGBC’s initiatives, particularly the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, which has become the gold standard for sustainable buildings worldwide.
Key highlights of the report include over 195,000 LEED-certified projects spanning 186 countries, encompassing 29 billion square feet of certified space and more than 547,000 residential units. LEED’s framework has enabled buildings to consume 25% less energy, reduce carbon emissions by 34%, and use 11% less water, contributing significantly to global sustainability goals. “Our global community has shaped policy, shifted markets toward sustainable materials, and proven that the built environment can lead the way to a better future,” said Peter Templeton, President and CEO of USGBC.
LEED’s influence extends beyond individual buildings to include schools, cities, and entire communities, ensuring that diverse building types and sectors meet high sustainability standards. The USGBC has also emphasized education and professional development, with over 205,000 credential holders worldwide driving transformation through their expertise. The introduction of programs like PERFORM, which helps organizations benchmark sustainability across real estate portfolios, exemplifies USGBC’s commitment to innovation and practical solutions.
Looking ahead, USGBC plans to launch LEED v5 in 2025, aligning with the Paris Agreement targets and addressing critical imperatives like decarbonization, resilience, biodiversity, and equity. These initiatives underscore USGBC’s role as a leader in advancing green building practices and its unwavering commitment to building a more sustainable, equitable, and resilient future. “The challenges before us are clear,” said Sarah Zaleski, Chief Products Officer of USGBC. “Bringing evolving solutions to projects globally will accelerate the next phase of progress as a community.”
