Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 19 November 2024 – The G20 summit was held in Rio de Janeiro on 18 and 19 November 2024 under the theme “Building a just and sustainable world”. The ​leaders of ​the major global economies met to ​address urgent global challenges, with a focus ​on social inclusion, sustainable development and reform of global governance institutions.
The establishment of the Global Partnership against Hunger and Poverty, an initiative aimed ​at ​eradicating hunger and poverty worldwide. This partnership aims to ​coordinate international actions and partnerships to implement effective programmes, aligning efforts ​at the national and international levels. Brazilian President ​Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stressed the urgency of placing ​hunger and poverty at the forefront of the international agenda by saying: “As long as there are foodless ​families on ​the table, children on the street and hopeless young people, there will be no peace. ​’
Climate ​action is another key priority, and leaders reaffirm their commitment to ​the Paris Agreement ​and explore ways ​to accelerate ​the transition to renewable energy sources. ​The Summit stressed the need to coordinate efforts ​to mitigate environmental impacts and ​maintain economic growth. It should be noted that the declaration called on the G20 countries to accelerate their climate targets to zero net emissions ahead of schedule.
Reform of the ​institutions of global governance is also an important issue, as the declaration encourages the long-awaited reforms of the United Nations Security Council to ​better ​reflect the realities of the twenty-first century. This initiative aims ​to enhance the effectiveness ​and legitimacy of international institutions in addressing contemporary global challenges.
The G20 summit concluded with a joint declaration outlining agreed initiatives and reaffirming the commitment ​of member countries to work together ​to ​create a just and sustainable future.
