
Barry Melancon's Transformative Leadership: A 30-Year Legacy at AICPA
NEW YORK, December 1, 2024 – Barry Melancon, CPA, CGMA, will retire on December 31, 2024, ​completing a 30-year term as President and ​Chief Executive ​Officer ​of the ​American ​Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and Chief Executive Officer of the ​Association of Internationally Chartered Professional Accountants (the Association). His leadership has indelibly shaped the accounting profession, leading ​it through major transformations and global expansions.
Chief Executives and Vision
Appointed in 1995 ​at the age of ​37, Melancon became the youngest CEO of AICPA. His first vision recognized the growing globalization of business, stressing the need for ​US accountants to adopt a more international perspective. ​In an interview ​in 1998, he said earlier: “Companies everywhere will interact much more internationally. »
Technological developments and ​initiatives
Under Melancon’s leadership, AICPA has ​launched several ​fundamental initiatives ​that have modernized the profession. These include ​the creation of CPA.com, ​the digitization of the CPA review and the creation of the National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion. It also monitored the ​development of the dynamic audit solution (DAS) ​and the creation of quality audit centres, all designed ​to improve the adaptability and relevance of the profession in a rapidly changing business ​environment.
Global integration and partnership training
In 2012, Melancon played ​a crucial ​role in establishing a joint venture with the Institute of ​Management (CIMA) Accountants, which ​led to the creation of the Charter ​Global Management ​Accounting (GCMA). This collaboration culminated ​in 2017 with the creation of the International Certified Professional Accountants Association, now the world’s largest accounting organization, representing over 650,000 members and students from 179 countries.
Global awareness ​and influence
Beyond organizational ​achievements, ​Melancon is a strong advocate for the profession, in collaboration with policy makers, regulators and business leaders around the world. Its leadership was expanded to chair the ​International Integrated Information Council, where it facilitated its integration into the IFRS Foundation and the formation of ​the ​International Council on ​Sustainability ​Standards. Transition and Future Leadership
As Melancon prepares to go down, the ​Association announced that Mark Koziel, CPA, CGMA, will succeed as CEO, starting January ​1, 2025.
